Work Permit for Spouse of International Students in Canada

Author: Jagpreet Puri

If you are a full-time international student in Canada and got married, you may be eligible to apply for Open Work Permit (OWP) of your spouse that is LMIA-exempt. This OWP may be valid till the expiry of your study permit.

Approval of OWP is not a right since it is creation of a public policy. Please consider the following helpful notes in this regard:
• Your marriage should be genuine and not to get any immigration status
• You must declare about your change in marital status truthfully to Canadian immigration when you submit any subsequent application and when asked by an officer at the airport or border.
• You must work in a skilled job while on work permit to be eligible to apply for spousal work permit.

At Takarra, we can assist you in submitting Spousal OWP applications and extensions in Canada.
