Study Visa Programs

Study in Canada Programs

Canada is an amazing place to study, with outstanding institutions, beautiful places to travel, and job opportunities that can help you grow and live the life you dreamed of. Find out how you can make Canada your home as well.

Before we begin, keep in mind that applying to study in Canada is a process, it does not end at receiving a study visa, coming to Canada, and calling it a day. Let us begin!

Study Visa

When applying for a study visa in Canada, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • An applicant must apply for a study permit for Canada well before the start date of the program they have been accepted to
  • Once in Canada, you can extend this visa or apply for a work permit from within Canada
  • The applicant must have been accepted/received their acceptance letter from an educational institution, college, or university, from a list of approved designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. DLI’s are the only institutions that can host international students.
  • The applicant must prove to having sufficient money to pay for one year of tuition fees, living expenses and transportation back to their home country, if needed. These expenses should be covered for the applicant and any family members who will be moving with the applicant.
  • The applicant must be law-abiding with no criminal record and not to be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate
  • The applicant must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination if necessary
  • The applicant must convince the immigration officer that once their authorized stay in Canada is complete, they will leave the country.

Important: If a person decides to study while visiting Canada, he/she does not require a study visa if the program in Canada is less than six months. However, he/she must complete that program within the period authorized for their stay in Canada.

Post Graduation Work Permit

An international student can apply for a post-graduate work permit within 6 months of completion of their program of study in Canada. The applicant can apply from within Canada or outside of Canada if the student has studied full time for a minimum of 8 months in a PGWP eligible DLI.

  • The PGWP can be valid for up to 3 years after being issued, but this timeline also depends on the duration of the study program(s) completed.

However, if they apply from within Canada, they must maintain their status in Canada. Otherwise, they should either leave Canada to apply from outside Canada or restore their status within 90 days of loosing their status in Canada.

Please note that a study permit becomes invalid 90 days after the student completes their program of study.

If the international student lost his/her status in Canada as student, restoration is mandatory if applying for post graduate work permit from within Canada. And do not work until you receive work permit.

Multiple Entry Visa

If you are from a country that is not visa exempt and have applied for extension of Study or new extension of Work Permit from within Canada, you may need to apply for multiple entry visa  to re-enter Canada.

This is because when you apply for study/work permit from outside Canada, you get multiple entry visa stamped in your passport that expires when that study/work permit expires.

Extension of Study Permit

In case your study permit is going to expire before you complete your studies and apply for PGWP, you must apply for extension of your study permit to continue studies in Canada and maintain your status as a student.

If your study permit has already expired, you must apply to restore your status as a student in addition to extending your study permit. However, restoration of your status is possible only if you apply within 90 days of losing it.
