Extension of Stay in Canada

Is your authorized stay in Canada going to expire soon? Did you know that it is your responsibility to maintain your status in Canada if you cannot return to your home country? No need to stress, let us see what options you have moving forward.

I am a Visitor

As a visitor, you must apply for an extension of your visitor visa, which is called a visitor record, from within Canada

I am an International Student

If you are an international student with a valid student visa, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • If you do not study for 150 days, even if you have a valid student visa, it can get cancelled. If you find yourself in this situation, apply to convert your status from a student visa to a visitor visa.
  • If you are about to graduate soon, know that a study permit becomes invalid 90 days after a student completes their program of study, regardless of when the study permit is supposed to expire.

I am Here on a Post-Graduate Work Permit

Post-graduate work permits (PGWP) are a once in a lifetime opportunity and cannot be extended as is. Therefore, if your PGWP is about to expire and you cannot apply for a PR, or you did not get a LMIA to apply for employer-specific work permit, you must apply for an extension of stay as a visitor within Canada to maintain status in Canada.

If you cannot extend your stay as international student or foreign worker, you must submit an application to extend your stay as visitor if you are unable to return to your home country.

Any unauthorized study or work done without a permit or on a deemed status as international student or foreign worker can make you inadmissible to remain in Canada.
